There was plenty of close action during the running of the Champion Spark Plug 400. Richard Petty (No. 43) went on to win the race, while Ricky Rudd (No. 88) was third, Harry Gant (No. 33) took fourth and Bobby Allison (No. 28) finished seventh. Dale Earnhardt, in his first start with the Richard Childress team, finished ninth.
